Skype coming to PSP. Make that PSP Slim - Only!

Sony has released a official confirmation that the Skype will be joining the list of PSP functionalities. It will be included in the firmware update of the device somewhat later this month but will be available to PSP Slim owners - only.

The PSP version of Skype appears to match the PC version in functionality. Users will be able to make and receive free calls between other Skype users. SkypeOut and SkypeIn, offering call service to and from cell phones and land lines, will also be supported, although you’ll have to make sure and have the required Skype Credits for these paid options. Also included with the PSP software are contact management tools and “Skype Presence,” which alerts other users about your online status.

To use the Skype service, you’ll need, in addition to an internet connection, a Memory Stick Duo and a microphone device. It’s currently a bit unclear as to what kind of microphone the service will require. However, in Japan, Sony has announced plans to offer on a solo basis the microphone that was originally bundled with its Talkman PSP translation software. Set for release on 1/24, the device will cost 2,500 yen for one mic or 4,000 yen for a package that includes two.
