Dark Alex messed it up: network update in v3.80 M33 upgrades you to Sony v3.90
Even though in latest two installments of Dark Alex custom firmware (v3.80 M33 and v3.90 M33) there are claims that Network Update option in PSP XMB has been modified to allow upgrading of custom firmware - it fails to do so, on oh such glorious way.
Trying to upgrade your custom firmware from v3.80 M33-3 to freshly released v3.90 M33 with Network Update option in the PSP will actually upgrade your device, but not to the firmware you were expecting to. Upgrade process, which we had the opportunity to witness, left the PSP device with the official Sony v3.90 firmware, instead of Dark Alexes custom firmware. No homebrew. Everything simply gone. PSP being dull as it has not been for a long time before.
Dark Alex did mention some stability issues with Network Update option, in his changelogs, but they are related to Network Update - crashing during the process - not installing official Sony firmware? Interestingly, the device which had the unfortunate destiny to go through this experiment - did not brick. It’s working perfectly fine, except the fact that it’s simply boring with official Sony’s firmware.
So there you have it. If you have Dark Alexes custom firmware v3.80 M33, or greater, and you want to keep the custom firmware on your PSP device. Think twice before you start the Network Update …
