Play games in multiplayer mode with just one UMD

As you might know, some games on the PSP support Game Sharing option allowing two or even sometimes more devices to play the game using just one UMD. Sometimes Game Sharing will just allow other person to see the demo of the game, or have limited functionality. This edition of Tips&Tricks will show you how to play games in multiplayer mode with using just one UMD. There’s a limitation of course, not all PSP games support this trick, and some require disabling options like in-game music.

Prerequisites

  1. Game UMD
  2. Two, or sometimes even more PSP devices
  3. A friend, or sometimes more friends to play with
  4. Game you’re about to play must not have a timeout for multiplayer mode, or needs a option to turn the timeout off

Step 1 ~ Person A loads/creates the game
Insert the UMD at persons A UMD drive and load up the game. Head to Multiplayer mode and create new Ad-Hoc game. Please note that it is necessary to switch off the timeout if there is one present, in order for other person(s) to have the time to load up the game themselves.

Step 2 ~ Person A ejects the UMD
Person A ejects the UMD from the drive. At this point the PSP will ask you whether you want to quit the game. Of course, you will select No, but please do note that some games will quit even if you select No, to prevent this, you should not select No until step 5.

Step 3 ~ Person B loads/joins the game
Insert the UMD at persons B UMD drive and load up the game. Head to Multiplayer mode and join Ad-Hoc game person A has previously created.

Step 4 ~ Person B ejects the UMD
Person B ejects the UMD from the drive. At this point the PSP will ask you whether you want to quit the game. Of course, you will select No, but please do note that some games will quit even if you select No, to prevent this, you should not select No until step 6.

Step 5 ~ Start the game
Insert the UMD at persons A UMD drive. If you haven’t selected No so far, both persons should select it now. Start the game.

Troubleshooting

  • If the game quits even if you select No, try inserting UMD in that persons PSP UMD drive and then selecting No.
  • If the game quits after starting, it is possible that some games, just like Wipeout require that you switch off the in-game music and sound, because it is loaded from the UMD.
  • If the game freezes after you quit from it, try inserting the UMD in that persons PSP UMD drive, that should “break the freeze”.
  • If you want to include more players repeat steps two through four for all additional players.

Conclusion
Not all PSP games support this, and eventually you might not be able to pull it off. Below is the list of games that have been reported to support this trick:

  • Twisted Metal: Head-On
  • Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 Remix
  • Ridge Racer
  • Mercury
  • WipEout Pure
  • Dead to Rights
  • Medievil: Resurrection
